Troubleshooting Tips for Commercial Dishwashers
Posted by SAMUEL DEAKIN
A commercial dishwasher is the backbone of any industrial kitchen. Constant, daily operation will have an affect on your machine and can lead to issues over time as with any piece of commercial equipment. This is less than ideal in such a busy space and can lead to significant downtime. This article is going to go over some common dishwasher issues and how they can be resolved.
Do not try to fix a commercial dishwasher on your own. Some issues can be dangerous and need the hand of a professional. These tips are for basic problems and to help identify the issues. If in doubt, contact a professional.
Dishwasher isn’t cleaning properly
Probably the most common issue that arises is that of dishes coming out dirty or streaked after a cycle. This can be caused by several factors.
Troubleshooting:
Check the filters: A clogged filter can block water from circulating properly leading to poor cleaning performance. Clean the filters regularly to prevent build up.
Check the spray arms: Clogged or damaged spray arms can impede water flow, again leading to poor cleaning performance. Make sure the spray arms are free of debris and check for cracks or signs of wear.
Check the water temperature: If the water is not hot enough in your commercial dishwasher, dishes may not be sanitised or cleaned properly. Check your water heater or dish washer settings.
Check your detergent: Overloading the machine with detergent can cause residue build up whilst using too little will mean dishes don’t get cleaned.
Dishwasher won’t drain properly
If there is standing water at the bottom of your dishwasher after a cycle, it is a clear sign there is an issue with the drainage system.
Troubleshooting:
Check the drain filter: A clogged drain filter is usually the issue here. Remove and clean the filter of any debris.
Check the drain hose: A folded up or blocked drain hose will prevent water from flowing out. Ensure the hose is not bent up and clean it out if necessary.
Drain pump malfunction: If the previous two tips aren’t the problem, it is likely an issue with the drain pump. This will require a technician for professional repair or replacement.
Water leaking from the dishwasher
An issue you definitely don’t want to ignore as it can lead to further damages and accidents.
Troubleshooting:
Check the door gasket: A worn out or damage door gasket can result in leaks. Check the rubber seal around the door and replace it if it is cracket or loose.
Stop overloading the machine: If you’re really trying to pack things into your dishwasher, you may end up overloading it and preventing the door from sealing properly. Make sure the dishwasher is loaded so that the door can be closed securely.
Check the hoses: A cracked or loose inlet or drain hose can lead to leakages. Check both hoses for damage and that they are tightly connected.
Dishwasher is making weird noises
If your commercial dishwasher is suddenly making loud or strange noises, this could indicate a mechanical problem.
Troubleshooting:
Check for obstructions: It sounds simple but check when loading your machine that everything is secure. Loose utensils or dishes moving during a cycle and rattle and cause strange noises.
Check the spray arms: If the spray arms are loose or blocked by something they might be hitting items during the wash cycle. Check that they are able to rotate freely.
Worn bearings or motor issues: If the noise seems to be coming from the motor or pump, it is likely to be a mechanical issue that will require professional repair.
Dishwasher won’t start
“Have you tried turning it off and on again?” A dishwasher not starting is likely to be an electrical or mechanical issue.
Troubleshooting:
Check the power supply: It might seem an obvious solution, but it is always worth a triple check. Ensure the dishwasher is plugged in correctly and that there are no tripped breakers or blown fuses in your electrical panel.
Check the door latch: Much like washing machines, commercial dishwashers will not start unless the door is securely latched or fully closed. Double check the latch and repair or replace if necessary.
Faulty control panel: If the power is on and the door is closed, the issue is probably with the control panel. This is best addressed by a qualified technician.
Dishwasher is overheating
An overheating dishwasher can lead to not only damaged dishes but also pose a greater safety risk to those working beside it.
Troubleshooting:
Check ventilation: Ensure there is adequate ventilation and airflow around your commercial dishwasher to prevent overheating. Check for blockages around the vents.
Thermostat issues: The thermostat regulates the water temperature inside the dishwasher and if it malfunctions the water can become too hot. This should be replaced by a qualified technician.
Dishwashers are a vital component to any commercial kitchen, but issues are bound to arise from time to time. Knowing how to fix small, common issues can help you to minimise downtime and keep things running smoothly. However, if you are having bigger issues and these troubleshooting tips do not solve the issue, always consult with a qualified technician.
